Dr. Advani is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Section of Infectious Diseases at Yale School of Medicine, and the Associate Hospital Epidemiologist at Yale-New Haven Hospital. She did her internal medicine and infectious disease training at University of Alabama at Birmingham. Prior to this, she earned her Master of Public Health degree at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and a research fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases and infection prevention at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

She is focused on improving patient safety and health outcomes through optimal use of rapid diagnostics and surveillance techniques. Her work at University of Alabama at Birmingham focused on the impact of changing surveillance definitions on healthcare-associated infections and prevention of Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSIs) by avoiding cultures from central lines and avoiding surveillance blood cultures in asymptomatic patients.

Her quality improvement work at YNHHS focuses on performing surveys to understand provider's knowledge and attitudes towards diagnostic tests, and targeting educational interventions based on their knowledge and evidence gaps. She has developed an evidence-based urine culture algorithm for evaluation of fever or instability at Yale New Haven Hospital, and is currently evaluating the effects of this algorithm on number of cultures, Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTIs) and hospital-acquired blood stream infections.
