Biography

Dr. Costello is an Associate Research Scientist in the Biostatistics Core at the Program on Aging in the Geriatrics Section of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Yale University School of Medicine. She is a lifespan developmental psychologist and applied biostatistician with expertise in life course epidemiologic research methods (quantitative and qualitative) and experience with innovative analytic methods used to study heterogeneity and disparities in development throughout the life course. Guided by the principles of social epidemiology and an ecological approach to promoting optimal health across all stages of development, she has collaborated with diverse investigators on a variety of interdisciplinary research and evaluation projects. These projects have included descriptive epidemiologic studies, health systems outcome evaluations, participatory action research programs, randomized community trials of positive youth development programs, analyses of disproportionality and disparity in the child welfare system, and longitudinal investigations of risk and resilience in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Since joining the Program on Aging, she has conducted analyses with nationally representative samples, investigating palliative and end-of-life care decision-making for people with dementia and their caregivers. Current projects include evaluating an approach to health care decision-making that is consistent with the values, preferences, and goals of older adults with complex chronic conditions, examining health care decision-making and advance care planning for older adults with dementia who do not have surrogate decision makers, and studying interpersonal processes among individuals with early-stage dementia and their adult child caregivers.

Dr. Costello earned master’s and doctoral degrees in Human Development and Psychology from Harvard University, a Master of Public Health degree in epidemiology and biostatistics from the University of Connecticut, and a Master of Business Administration degree in investment finance from the University of Hartford.
