Biography

I received my Ph.D. in Microbiology in 1986 from State University of New York at Buffalo. After post-doctoral work at Yale in the Departments of Cell Biology and Surgery, I joined the laboratory of Dr. James L. Boyer in Internal Medicine/Digestive Diseases in 1993. The emphasis of this lab is the study of mechanisms in bile formation and cholestasis. To this end, early work focused on animal models of liver injury, with an emphasis on membrane transporters and their role in bile formation. With the discovery of the Organic Solute Transporter alpha-beta as the primary transporter involved in the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids, my research turned to understanding how this intestinal transporter can be regulated in cholestasis.  I am now focused on how biliary organoids from human bile can provide insight into Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, a rare cholangiopathy for which there is no accepted therapy.
