I received my Ph.D. in Microbiology in 1986 from State University of New York at Buffalo. After post-doctoral work at Yale in the Departments of Cell Biology and Surgery, I joined the laboratory of Dr. James L. Boyer in Internal Medicine/Digestive Diseases in 1993. The emphasis of this lab is the study of mechanisms in bile formation and cholestasis. I have primarily studied animal models of liver injury, with an emphasis on membrane transporters. For the last ten years I have focused on characterization of the Organic Solute Transporter alpha-beta, a heteromeric transporter primarily responsible for the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids. In the past year I have begun a study of progenitor (stem) cells in human liver, using liver organoids to look at genetic changes in cholangiocytes from patients with cholestasis, especially Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis.
