Biography

“On average, women spend 30 years of their lives trying to avoid pregnancy,” says Dr. Aileen M. Gariepy. “I'm here to help.” As Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at Yale, Dr. Gariepy sees patients everyday who are seeking the latest information about their birth control options. “Developments in contraceptive technology have led to pregnancy prevention options that better match women's needs—and can be 20 times more effective than the pill,” she explains.

A magna cum laude graduate of Cornell University, Dr. Gariepy earned her MD from MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine in Pennsylvania and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, where she also served as Chief Resident. After completing a fellowship in family planning at the University of Pittsburgh and Magee Women’s Hospital, Dr. Gariepy stayed on to earn her Masters of Public Health.

As a Yale faculty member, Dr. Gariepy has won numerous awards, including the 2015 American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) GREOG National Faculty Award, the 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award from the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and the 2013 ACOG Mentor of the Year Award for District I. In 2010, she brought her family planning expertise to Malawi, a country in Southeastern Africa, where she helped train local healthcare providers in modern contraceptive methods.

In her academic work, Dr. Gariepy is committed to making women’s lives better through patient-oriented clinical research. Her research interests include contraception, unintended pregnancy and comparative effectiveness in obstetrics and gynecology. Her latest work focuses on the relationship between pregnancy planning and maternal mental health. In 2014, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg cited Dr. Gariepy’s research in a Supreme Court decision on the impact of cost on IUD utilization (Burwell v. Hobby Lobby).

“I am continuously amazed and humbled by the difficult circumstances women and their families find themselves in and the strength and grace with which they approach their decisions,” says Dr. Gariepy. “I love taking care of women!”
