Radiation Therapy Breast Program:

The Radiation Therapy Breast Program at Yale Medicine has dedicated radiation oncologists with expertise in breast cancer who work closely with the other breast sub-specialities to deliver the highest level of individualized care for every breast patient.We provide state-of-the-art breast cancer treatment with a compassionate approach in a variety of locations across the state, so that every patient receives the premier level of care close to home. The Yale Department of Therapeutic Radiology’s program in breast cancer is one of the most widely recognized in the world. We were one of the first facilities in the country to offer breast conserving surgery followed by radiation therapy to the intact breast. Our centers provide an integrated breast team approach to deliver a diverse array of advanced technologies and treatment techniques that are tailored to an individual patient’s breast cancer.

The Yale Medicine breast program radiation oncology program is comprised of national experts in breast cancer, which include Dr. Meena Moran the Director of the Yale Radiation Breast Cancer Program and Dr. Zhe Chen, a national physics expert who leads the quality assurance and physics for the breast team and includes a group of dedicated group of radiation oncologists along with breast dosimetrists,physicists and radiation therapists that offer the latest radiation technologies for breast cancer.The breast team meets once per week across all sites to review every breast cancer patient’s individual treatment plan. The state-of-the-art equipment provides technologies and delivery methods including conventional external beam radiation, hypofractionated breast treatment, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH), and prone breast treatment in which the patient is lying face down for treatment reducing the amount of radiation reaching the heart and lungs. Treatment is offered in one of the many sites across the state, and quality assurance is performed by the breast cancer team across all centers to ensure that a uniformly high standard-of- care is delivered to each patient.

Conventional external beam radiation:Radiation is delivered to the breast or chest wall (in the post-mastectomy setting) with or without treatment to the local lymph nodes, over a period of 5-6.5 weeks.

Hypofractionated whole breast radiation:Some patients, after breast conserving surgery, may be candidates for a shorter course of 3-4 weeks (instead of the conventional 5-6.5 weeks) of radiation.These two treatment approaches have been compared in research studies with long term results that show that the shorter course is as safe and effective in selected patients.Short course radiation is usually an option when the lymph nodes are not being treated. Your radiation oncologist can help to determine if you may be a candidate for a shorter course.

Deep Inspiration Breath Hold:This technology utilizes the anatomic benefits chest expansion when a patient takes a deep breath, in which the expanded chest moves the heart away from the chest wall).Using infrared cameras, this system tracks a patient’s respiratory pattern and electronically triggers the radiation beam only when the patient is breathing in deep enough for the heart to be out of the radiation field.

3 Dimensional/Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT): The radiation oncologist uses a CT scan of each patient in the daily treatment position, to design radiation beams which were tailored to an individual patient anatomy so that an even dose of radiation is distributed to the breast/chest wall
