Movement Disorders

Dr. Machado is board certified in Neurology with subspecialty training in Movement Disorders. Dr. Machado committed to a career caring for those with Movement Disorders early in his life when his grandmother was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease while he was a high school student in Waterbury, CT. A graduate of Trinity College (BA, Neuroscience, 2001) and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine (MD, 2005), he completed neurology residency training at the Yale School of Medicine, where he was also chosen to be Chief Resident. He was subsequently recruited to join the faculty at Yale, where his primary responsibility is the care of patients with involuntary movements in the Neurology Outpatient Clinic in the Division of Movement Disorders. Dr. Machado has extensive clinical expertise in the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of patients with disorders of involuntary movement, including the full range of both hyperkinetic and hypokinetic movement disorders. To this end, he has contributed substantially to the clinical growth of the Division and now follows one of the largest cohorts of patients with Parkinson’s disease in the entire state. He began a dedicated Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Clinic which has delivered the type of care that has taken Yale to a Top 5 DBS program in the Tristate area in only 3 years. He has an ever expanding clinical research enterprise and has spearheaded clinical trials such as one on a customized approach to use of botulinum toxins for essential tremor. He is also participating in clinical research projects using a multidisciplinary research team approach. He continues to develop a research program in Parkinson’s disease and to develop a record of publication in scholarly journals. He is also heavily involved in the teaching of medical students, residents and fellows, and completed the Medical Education Fellowship Program at Yale. His passion is also in the education of society at large regarding movement disorders. As an example, he help to begin and continues to serve as the medical director of the CT Chapter of the International Essential Tremor Foundation. He has been repeatedly chosen as a Vitals Top 10 Doctors, awarded only to 1% of all doctors nationally who meet the criteria for this honor.
