Biography

Amy Brooks-Kayal, MD is Professor of Pediatrics, Neurology and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Co-director of the Translational Epilepsy Research Program, and Chief and Ponzio Family Chair of Pediatric Neurology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Children's Hospital Colorado Dr. Brooks-Kayal trained at Johns Hopkins University, University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She joined the University of Colorado in 2008 after 13 years on the faculty at University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Her area of clinical focus is pediatric epilepsy.

Her research focuses on regulation of neurotransmitter systems during epilepsy and epileptogenesis, with particular emphasis on GABAA receptor expression regulation by the JAK/STAT pathway, and targeting these molecular changes to develop disease modifying therapy.

Dr. Brooks-Kayal is chair of the Development Council and a Past President of the American Epilepsy Society, a member of the NIH/NINDS Advisory Council and Commission on North American Affairs of the ILAE, a Director of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and is an active member of the American Neurological Association, Child Neurology Society, Society for Neuroscience and American Academy of Neurology.
