The Yale Pediatric Sleep Center
The Pediatric Sleep Center at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital is the region's leader in diagnosing and treating sleep problems in infants, toddlers, adolescents and teens arising from medical conditions or from behavioral or developmental problems.
Patients receive comprehensive, compassionate care in a warm, kid-friendly environment and are supervised by physicians who have board certifications in Pediatrics, Pediatric Pulmonology, and Sleep Medicine. Our center is the only one in the state with board certified physicians exclusively caring for children. Our physicians are experts in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of sleep disorders.
We diagnose and treat patients with respiratory and non-respiratory sleep complaints.
Evaluation
Providers concerned about sleep disordered breathing may refer directly to the sleep laboratory for testing. If patients need CPAP for obstructive sleep apnea, or if there are other concerns about a child's sleep, we recommend consultation in Sleep Clinic first. The clinic evaluation provides a comprehensive overview of a child's sleep habits and difficulties, and allows us to ensure that we are ordering the appropriate testing.
Overnight sleep studies in the Pediatric Sleep Laboratory are useful in the assessment of snoring, sleep disturbance and daytime sleepiness. Some children may benefit from overnight polysomnography (sleep testing) to further define the causes of sleep disturbance.
Pediatric Sleep Laboratory Testing
Currently our Center offers sleep testing for children at Yale-New Haven and Bridgeport Hospital. Both laboratories exclusively study children and are staffed by registered polysomnographic technicians who are experts in making children comfortable to obtain the best possible sleep study. The staff has extensive experience helping children with developmental difficulties get used to the monitoring equipment. The laboratory offers the most advanced sleep testing equipment available including capnography and home sleep testing equipment. We also perform daytime sleep testing including the multiple sleep latency and multiple wake testing to assess the degree of daytime somnolence, and adequacy of treatment for disorders such as narcolepsy. We also use actigraphy monitoring which quantifies sleep-wake patterns in children at home.
Referrals
We welcome patients from infant to teens who may have difficulty getting a restful night sleep. Sleep study results are available promptly to your child's pediatrician and/or specialty physician. If treatment is necessary, we will follow-up with your child's physician throughout their course and completion of treatment.
