Spencer Foundation Large Research Grants
The Large Research Grants on Education Program supports education research projects that will contribute to the improvement of education, broadly conceived, with budgets ranging from $125,000 to $500,000 for projects ranging from one to five years. We anticipate awarding grants with budgets across each of the following funding tiers -- $125,000 to 250,000; $250,001 to $375,000; and $375,001 to $500,000. Within each of our funding tiers, we evaluate projects within tier and strongly encourage applicants to submit for funding that best fits their project rather than applying for the highest amount. We accept Intent to Apply forms twice a year.
This program is “field-initiated” in that proposal submissions are not in response to a specific request for a particular research topic, discipline, design, method, or location. Our goal for this program is to support rigorous, intellectually ambitious and technically sound research that is relevant to the most pressing questions and compelling opportunities in education.
Applications Open: Early April 2025
Intent to Apply: May 14, 2025, 12:00 p.m. (Central/Chicago Time)
Full Proposal Deadline: June 17, 2025, 12:00 p.m. (Central/Chicago Time)
Program contact: Maricelle Garcia, largegrants@spencer.org
Spencer Foundation Racial Equity Research Grants
The Racial Equity Research Grants program supports education research projects that will contribute to understanding and ameliorating racial inequality in education. The Spencer Foundation is interested in funding studies that aim to understand and disrupt the reproduction and deepening of inequality in education, and which seek to (re)imagine and make new forms of equitable education. Thus, the Foundation is interested in research projects that seek to envision educational opportunities in a multiplicity of education systems, levels, settings, and developmental ranges and that reach beyond documenting conditions and paradigms that contribute to persistent racial inequalities. Learn more here.
Applications Open: March 21, 2025
Intent to Apply Form Deadline: May 5, 2025, 12 p.m. (Central/Chicago Time)
Full Proposal Deadline: June 25, 2025, 12 p.m. (Central/Chicago Time)

Started in 2022, COMSEP COACH is an interactive, longitudinal course, based on the competencies of the International Federation of Coaches. The coaching program gives medical educators the skills and resources to effectively coach their learners and peers.
Why Coaching? Coaching has broad applicability and is focused on asking questions that encourage exploration and curiosity in the coachee. While mentoring is sometimes thought of as creating someone like oneself by directing them, coaching involves helping others achieve their goals by asking reflective and thoughtful questions.
Program Overview The in-person program includes pre-meeting orientation materials, welcome reception, and a one-and-a-half-day conference taught by certified coaches that will include large group sessions and peer coaching practice. This is followed by longitudinal learning and practice during monthly conference calls via zoom, and a final half day virtual capstone course and celebration!
