Voices of DEI: Robert Alpern, MD

February 06, 2022

Introducing Robert Alpern, MD, of the Section of Nephrology.

What does diversity, equity, and inclusion mean to you personally?

It means that everyone is equal. They should all have the same opportunities throughout society and at Yale, they should be treated the same and they should all feel included on our campus. Because this has typically not been the case for members of different races and ethnicity, an important focus of this fairness and equality becomes race and ethnicity.

Why do you value diversity?

First and foremost, because it is the right thing to do. Second it also enriches our campus and contributes to a diversity of opinions and actions.

Why should an academic setting be equal and inclusive?

It is important in all settings, but since we only control our academic setting, I will address your question. As above, it is the right thing to do. Everyone should be treated equally and should feel that they are a valued member of the community.

What do you look forward to most?

I hope that we will someday have a campus and society wherein race and ethnicity are a characteristic that is meaningless in how one is thought of or treated.

The Department of Internal Medicine’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Internal Medicine knows that diversity, equity, and inclusion is critical to our mission; that providing a safe, welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds results in beneficial diversity of thought; and believes that having a diverse team enhances our ability to provide excellent clinical care, research, and medical education.
