Introducing Michael Beasley, MD, of the Section of Cardiovascular Medicine.

What does diversity, equity, and inclusion mean to you personally?

Overcoming implicit bias to allow for maximal human potential.

Why do you value diversity?

For one, people should have equitable opportunities regardless of the social barriers they face. But also, diversity increases the creativity of thought and allows for solutions to be discovered when they would have otherwise been overlooked or unimagined.

Why should an academic setting be equal and inclusive?

In academics, we strive to be the ideal of what we want our greater society to become.

Why are you on the diversity committee?

I want to be part of the solution which allows for equitable opportunities for my daughters as they become women.

What changes have you noticed in the department?

Over the past year or so, there has been a significantly stronger focus on DEI issues. Also, the incoming class of general cardiology fellows is more diverse than ever before.

What do you look forward to most?

Attracting top notch URIM learners to join us at Yale.

The Department of Internal Medicine’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Internal Medicine knows that diversity, equity, and inclusion is critical to our mission; that providing a safe, welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds results in beneficial diversity of thought; and believes that having a diverse team enhances our ability to provide excellent clinical care, research, and medical education.
