Sarah Taylor, MD, MSCR has been named section chief of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine for Yale’s Department of Pediatrics and New Haven Children's Hospital effective January 3, 2023. Dr. Taylor is a Professor of Pediatrics (Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine) and the Director of Neonatal Clinical Research.

Dr. Taylor received her MD from University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and completed pediatric residency at Medical University of South Carolina. She attended Medical University of South Carolina for pediatric fellowship and her Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) degree.

Named to Castle Connolly’s 2022 “Top Doctors” list and Connecticut Magazine’s 2019 “Best Doctors” list, Dr. Taylor has provided neonatal care and specialized in neonatal clinical research since arriving at Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital in 2018. Nationally and internationally recognized, she was nominated for the Ehrlich-Koldovsky Early Career Award for Research in Human Milk and Lactation in 2014, earned the Sharon Spriggs Gold Ribbon Award for Support of Breastfeeding in South Carolina in 2013, and was elected to the International Association of Pediatrics Top Pediatrician in 2010, among other honors.

In her time at YSM, she has tripled the number of clinical research studies and the section’s number of externally funded studies has more than doubled. She has helped establish collaborative clinical and translational research with more than six high-level academic institutions throughout the U.S. and is working to increase international collaboration. Dr. Taylor also established the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Yale Neonatal NOuRISH (Yale Neonatal Nutrition Outcomes Research In Sustaining mother and infant Health) to investigate how fetal and neonatal nutritional and metabolic exposures impact outcomes.

Led by Dr. Taylor, the section will continue to build the next generation of Yale neonatal-perinatal scientists – just last year, faculty in the section received two K awards.

In her new role, Dr. Taylor will oversee all elements of the neonatal-perinatal medicine program. She will focus her efforts on organizing the research activities, clinical trials, and educational programs in this area, recruitment and retention of faculty, trainees, and staff, and faculty development and wellbeing.

Department of Pediatrics leadership thanks Mark Mercurio, MD, MA for his years of leadership in the section and Matthew Bizzarro, MD for his role as interim section chief prior to Dr. Taylor’s appointment.
