Gerald I. Shulman, MD, PhD, MACP, MACE, FRCP is the 2021 winner of the Manpei Suzuki International Prize for Diabetes Research in recognition of his pioneering and extensive contributions over many years, leading to several paradigm shifts in our understanding of physiologic regulation of liver and muscle carbohydrate and fat metabolism in humans, and its dysregulation in type 2 diabetes.
Shulman, George R. Cowgill Professor of Physiological Chemistry, professor of medicine and of cellular & molecular physiology, and co-director of the Yale Diabetes Research Center, will be awarded the prize during a ceremony to be held in Tokyo, Japan on March 11, 2022. The prize is presented annually by the Manpei Suzuki Diabetes Foundation in Tokyo, Japan to advance diabetes research that will contribute to the health and welfare of people around the world.
Shulman also has been elected to a three-year term as chair of Section 42: Medical Physiology and Metabolism of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) from May 1, 2022 to April 30, 2025.
