We are pleased to announce Rakesh Mistry, MD, MS, Professor of Pediatric and Emergency Medicine, as section chief of pediatric emergency medicine effective August 1, 2023. He then completed his fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI, while also earning an MS in Epidemiology from the Medical College of Wisconsin. Prior to his tenure at the University of Colorado, Dr. Mistry was an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine from 2005-2013.

Some of Dr. Mistry’s notable national committee service and leadership positions include past-chair and executive committee member of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Collaborative Research Committee, membership on the Steering Committee of international Pediatric Emergency Research Networks from 2016-2022, and membership on the Sub-board of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the American Board of Pediatrics since 2019. An author or co-author for over 130 original research articles, a Top Peer Reviewer for the Annals of Emergency Medicine, Jean Cortner Divisional Teaching Award winner, and Director of Academic Affairs and Director of Research in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Children’s Hospital of Colorado, we are thrilled to see where his leadership will take the section of pediatric emergency medicine at Yale.

Dr. Mistry’s research focus is emergency department (ED) infectious diseases, specifically implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs for the emergency setting using informatics and clinical decision support systems. He has obtained funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Emergency Medicine Foundation to support his research efforts. His other academic interests also include faculty development and mentorship of future child health and emergency medicine specialists.

In his new role, Dr. Mistry will oversee and develop the section’s clinical, research, and educational programs and recruitment and retention of faculty, trainees, and staff. He will also lead the section’s quality improvement initiatives, conduct independent research activities, engage in work on antibiotic stewardship and implementation science, and organize research activities and clinical trials within the section. Dr. Mistry will also support and expand the use of pediatric clinical pathways and other quality improvement measures in all our system emergency departments to further the goal of having a single standard of care for all children throughout our health system.

We would like to extend our thanks to Allen Hsiao, MD, FAAP, FAMIA for his role as interim section chief prior to Dr. Mistry’s appointment.

Please join us in extending a huge congratulations to Dr. Mistry!
