In our children’s hospital, we are constantly looking for ways to improve the care that we deliver to our patients, and our residents have taken a leadership role in this effort. At the start of each academic year, every resident joins a team of 5 or 6 residents and works on a quality improvement project in the children’s hospital. These teams also include other members of the inter-professional healthcare team, such as nurses and pharmacists. Many of these projects have led to meaningful change and have improved how we care for our patients. Residents participate in monthly quality improvement educational sessions led by our QI staff and are mentored by faculty members. In May, we hold our annual Pediatric Resident Quality Improvement Symposium in which each team presents a poster illustrating its project. Members of new intern classes will join existing teams and continue to work on current projects in progress or work to develop new ideas.
