Antibiotic Stewardship Track

The goal of the Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) Fellowship Track is to provide fellows with the knowledge, practical experience, and leadership skills necessary to become future leaders in hospital-based antimicrobial stewardship programs. The curriculum is highly individualized and tailored to each fellow's interests, career goals, and educational needs while providing broad exposure to the core principles of antimicrobial stewardship.

Core components include:

1. Participation in prospective audit and feedback

  • Participate in handshake stewardship rounds and gain practical experience in prospective audit and feedback.
  • Contribute to stewardship decision-making by participating in discussions surrounding stewardship rules, data queries, and program development.
  • Opportunities for dedicated stewardship experiences in high-impact settings, including the NICU and other intensive care units.

2. Clinical pathway development

  • Lead the development of a new clinical pathway or the revision and implementation of an existing antimicrobial stewardship clinical pathway.

3. Multidisciplinary stewardship leadership

  • Participate regularly in multidisciplinary antimicrobial stewardship meetings to develop communication, negotiation, and interdisciplinary leadership skills.

4. Antimicrobial stewardship scholarship

  • Receive mentorship in designing and completing an antimicrobial stewardship research project.
  • Fellows will identify an area of stewardship need—such as antimicrobial utilization, antimicrobial safety, diagnostic stewardship, telehealth and stewardship, implementation science, or dissemination of stewardship interventions—and develop a scholarly project with the goal of publication and presentation at national meetings such as ID Week, the International Pediatric Antimicrobial Stewardship Conference, or the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) Meeting.
  • This project may also fulfill the fellow's Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC) research requirement.

5. Teaching and education

  • Develop and deliver concise educational sessions for trainees and multidisciplinary clinical teams to support institutional antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.

6. Quality improvement

  • Design and implement antimicrobial stewardship-focused quality improvement (QI) projects that promote sustainable improvements in patient care.

7. Clinical informatics and Epic optimization

  • Interested fellows may complete Epic Clinician Builder training and contribute to stewardship-focused SmartPhrases, order sets, and other clinical decision support tools.

8. Advanced stewardship experiences

  • Gain additional experience in diagnostic stewardship and outpatient antimicrobial stewardship, two rapidly expanding areas of pediatric infectious diseases that are increasingly recognized as priorities for improving antimicrobial use across the continuum of care.

By graduation, fellows completing the AMS Track will have developed practical stewardship expertise, scholarly productivity, leadership experience, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills that prepare them for future roles directing or contributing to hospital antimicrobial stewardship programs.
