Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship

Overview

The Yale Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship training program spans three years and aims to provide a comprehensive clinical and research experience. Our mission statement is:

  • To educate trainees to provide the highest level of patient care in clinical pediatric endocrinology.
  • To teach trainees the fundamental skills in conducting academic research that will provide the basis for a successful career in basic or clinical investigation.
  • To effectively impart the skills of teaching to a variety of learners in diverse settings, including instilling a dedication to lifelong self-learning.

Didactics

Fellows attend and participate in multiple interactive didactic conferences per week. Our department collaborates and works closely with the Adult Endocrinology section to foster education across all topics related to the field. Fellows present about 6 times per year for various conferences within the adult and pediatric Endocrinology departments.

Curriculum

First Year Curriculum

i. Inpatient Diabetes and Endocrinology Service (approximately 3.5 months)
ii. Outpatient Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinics (approximately 6 months)
iii. Protected time for Pediatric Boards Preparation (0.5 month)
iv. Research (approximately 1 month)

  1. Inpatient Diabetes and Endocrinology Service: Fellows typically spend 1 week at a time on call, which encompasses diabetes and endocrinology services. While on call, the fellows work closely with faculty to manage patients admitted to these services, as well as evaluating and managing new consultations within the Yale New Haven Hospital system. In person consultations occur at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, and remote consultations occur with affiliate YNHH Hospitals. Fellows are in charge of supervising the resident teams and have ample opportunity to provide education whilst conducting rounds. While on call, fellows additionally gain experience triaging new referrals and providing medical guidance to local pediatricians and families.
  2. Outpatient Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinics: On the outpatient service, first year fellows conduct 5 half-day clinics per week. This includes three continuity clinics per month (two endocrine and one diabetes), in which fellows maintain their own panel of patients whom they follow longitudinally. Fellows gain exposure to a wide range of pediatric endocrine disorders including but not limited to Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, obesity, disorders of growth and puberty, thyroid disease, disorders of the adrenal gland, and genetic syndromes with related endocrinopathies. Fellows are additionally given the opportunity to rotate through a variety of multidisciplinary subspecialty clinics including Obesity/Bariatric surgery program, Yale Gender Program, Differences of Sexual Differentiation, and Metabolic bone clinic.
  3. Research: First year fellows have a combined total of 1 month (split into 2 week blocks) to begin designing their research projects and identifying their research mentor.
  4. Protected time for Pediatric Boards Preparation: First year fellows are given 2 weeks of dedicated study time in preparation for their pediatric boards, which includes reduced clinic responsibilities and no required inpatient call/service.

Second and Third Year Curriculum

i. Inpatient Diabetes and Endocrinology Service: approximately 6-7 weeks

  1. Second and third year fellows conduct 2 half-day clinics per week whilst transitioning their focus to executing their research project. Fellows have the opportunity to work with departments outside of Pediatric Endocrinology based on interest. Opportunities exist in basic research, clinical research, translational research, or education.
  2. Fellows with a particular interest in pursuing a career in research are able to apply for a Ph.D in Investigative Medicine. Additional opportunities exist for pursuing advanced degrees in Master’s in Public Health and Master’s in Health Science.
  3. The Global Health Equity Scholars (GHES) program offers a unique international experience for postdoctoral fellows, and advanced PhD and professional school students.

Clinical Training

Our clinical service cares for a diverse patient population with disorders of carbohydrate and mineral metabolism as well as the entire spectrum of pediatric endocrinology conditions. This service includes a multi-disciplinary program for children with diabetes which conducts a 5 half-day clinic each week. Both Type 1 and II Diabetes forms this patient base. Another 4 ambulatory sessions are devoted to general endocrine problems including those of growth, puberty and disorders of bone and mineral metabolism.
