Pathology Department Employees Acknowledged for Escalating Concerns

March 08, 2022

The Yale Pathology Department recently recognized the actions of two employees for their attention to detail after they escalated concerns.

Gary Uhlan, a Laboratory Assistant III in the Gross Room, discovered an irreplaceable specimen was not immediately placed in a refrigerator for safe keeping and Pathology pickup. Gary rectified the situation and escalated his concern to ensure the issue was documented to prevent future occurrences.

Crystal Moriello, Yale Pathology Morgue and Autopsy Technician, was receiving a deceased patient in the morgue and detected that the patient had two mismatched ID bands. Crystal stopped the line and waited for the service area to arrive in the morgue to confirm the correct ID. The service area removed the incorrect ID, and an error report was submitted.

Crystal has been with Yale Pathology for over two years while Gary has been a member of our team since 2013. For their attention to detail and commitment to accountability, Gary and Crystal were honored with “Great Catch” awards.
