Clinical Services

The Department of Pathology advances healthcare along the tri-partite mission of clinical diagnosis, research, and teaching. The clinical activities in the department are focused on Anatomic Pathology and its three major branches: Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, and Autopsy Pathology. Our molecular diagnostics team provides expertise to serve all anatomic pathology needs.

Each branch evaluates specimens of different types. The clinical goal of the department is to not merely put a name on a lesion but more importantly to provide the diagnostic and often prognostic and predictive information needed to properly direct the subsequent treatment of the patient.

Our faculty provide anatomic pathology services for Yale New Haven Hospital (both the York Street and Saint Raphael campuses), Bridgeport Hospital (including the Milford campus), and the VA Connecticut Healthcare System, West Haven Campus, as well as dozens of community physicians through our outreach program.

  • Surgical Pathology is Yale Pathology’s most comprehensive diagnostic service, reflecting the various sub-specialties of more than forty highly qualified physicians. Our board-certified pathologists are experts in most subspecialty areas and offer complete services for all surgical pathology needs. Areas of intense subspecialty interest include the fields of gynecologic, gestational and reproductive pathology, breast pathology, gastroenterologic and hepatic pathology, genitourinary and renal pathology, dermatopathology, hematopathology, neuropathology, and ophthalmic pathology, among others.

  • The Cytopathology division of the Department of Pathology at the Yale New Haven Hospital provides preparatory and diagnostic services for all fluid, smear and aspiration specimens.

  • The Autopsy Service provides is responsible for processing the paperwork for all deceased patients including the death certificates and autopsy consents. Our team has a combined 75 years of experience available to guide you through this difficult time.

  • Molecular diagnostics translates new discoveries and novel technologies into useful clinical tests that provide a molecular fingerprint of diseases to guide patient management, from diagnosis to treatment.

  • An open resource that supports research into the causes of and treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, as well as normal aging, with the goal of procuring and archiving high-quality brain tissue specimens, paired with blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and non-central nervous system tissues, such as muscle, fibroblasts, etc., as well as deep patient health records data.
