The Yale New Haven Hospital Autopsy Service began performing the autopsies for Bridgeport Hospital in 2001. The staff would rent a car, go to Bridgeport Hospital, and perform the autopsies in the autopsy room on site. In 2006, an agreement was reached, and a licensed funeral director was contracted to bring all Bridgeport Hospital patients with consent for autopsy to the Yale New Haven Hospital–York Street Campus for the procedure. The patients are transported back to Bridgeport Hospital to be released to the funeral home or cremation service of the family’s choosing. The transportation and autopsy are done at no cost to the family.
