Second-year MD Students and MCE Coaches Celebrated at December Gathering

January 09, 2023

Second-year Yale School of Medicine MD students and their 60 Medical Coach Experience (MCE) coaches were recognized and celebrated with medical education deans on December 1, 2022, in Cohen Auditorium. It was the first time this event could take place in person since 2019.

The MCE coaches, 70% of whom were Yale New Haven Hospital hospitalists, devote several hours each week, over the course of 20 sessions, to coaching a team of four medical students, beginning in spring of the students’ first year, after the students completed the Interprofessional Longitudinal Clinical Experience course.

“In the MCE course, students develop their clinical skills and identity as future physicians by examining patients, engaging in clinical reasoning, and then presenting those patients and receiving feedback from physician coaches over the course of eight months before they begin their clerkships,” says MCE Director Barry J. Wu, MD, FACP, professor of clinical medicine. Wu adds, “The quality of the teaching and the consistent and dedicated mentorship in the clinical setting by MCE coaches is exceptional.”
