National Women Physicians Day

National Women Physicians Day is celebrated on February 3, the birthday of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive a medical degree in the U.S. The day honors the extensive contributions of women in medicine. Blackwell was drawn to the medical profession after helping a friend who was undergoing a terminal illness who wished she had a female doctor. Despite much opposition, Blackwell graduated first in her class from Geneva Medical College in upstate New York in 1849, writing her doctoral thesis on typhoid fever. Blackwell returned to her home country of England to open a private practice and created a medical school for women in the late 1860s.
