Biography

Once she started her medical training as an obstetrician-gynecologist, it didn’t take Juliet Mushi, MD, long to know high-risk pregnancy was the sub-specialty for her.

“For me, the best part of practicing medicine is connecting with patients and nowhere did I feel that stronger than when a woman is going through a high-risk pregnancy, whether its complications she or her child are potentially facing,” says Dr. Mushi. “Having a child is one of many transformative experiences in a woman’s life and to be facing an issue during that is difficult. It is amazing to help them through all of this.”

Growing up in southern Africa, Dr. Mushi says she was drawn to a field that would help women. “In my community, women’s rights and reproductive health rights, in particular, were diminished and that had an impact on me,” she says. “Because if you can help a woman do well, it translates to helping her children, too.”

When it comes to guiding her patients through tough situations, Dr. Mushi says her first priority is to be fully present. “Whether I am giving them good news or bad news or going through different scenarios, I make sure to answer their questions, follow up with them, and help them navigate the medical complex, which can be incredibly intimidating,” she says. “I am an emotionally connected person and I get personal satisfaction from the relationships I form with my patients."

Dr. Mushi does not currently perform deliveries.
