David Kovacevic, MD, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who joined Yale Orthopaedics in 2015 after completing his clinical fellowship at Columbia University and the Center for Shoulder, Elbow and Sports Medicine. As an Assistant Professor at Yale School of Medicine and an Attending Surgeon at Yale New Haven Hospital, he educates residents and fellows to be caring and diligent surgeons. He and his team place a priority of putting the patient first.
Dr. Kovacevic specializes in advanced shoulder, elbow and knee arthroscopy including primary ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair as well as complex primary and revision shoulder and elbow repair, reconstruction, and replacement utilizing all-arthroscopic, arthroscopic-assisted, and open surgical techniques to relieve patients of their pain, restore their function, and improve quality of life. His personal mission is simple—he strives to provide compassionate, quality, world class care to adults, adolescents, and athletes at all levels who sustain injuries of the shoulder and elbow. During his clinical fellowship, he was assistant team physician for the Rockland Boulders Professional Baseball Club and Columbia University athletics, and cared for athletes on the New York Yankees and New York City Football Club. He is currently a team physician for Yale Athletics, including care for baseball, tennis, golf, and fencing. Dr. Kovacevic is also head team physician for Yale Rugby.
He is a graduate of Miami University and earned his medical degree from Ohio State University, during which time he was a research fellow at Hospital for Special Surgery and the Tissue Engineering, Regeneration, and Repair Research Program. He completed his surgical internship, orthopaedic residency, and George W. Crile research fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he served as administrative Chief Resident. During his training in Cleveland, Dr. Kovacevic continued his development as a clinician-scientist and learned from leaders in the field of shoulder and elbow surgery and sports medicine. He currently holds the clinician-scientist research career development award from the National Institutes of Health for the investigation of inflammation in rotator cuff tear and repair.
Dr. Kovacevic is a candidate member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America, an associate member of the Orthopaedic Research Society, and member of the American Orthopaedic Association Emerging Leaders Program. His primary research interests are focused on biologic augmentation of tendon-bone healing and preventing rotator cuff muscle fatty atrophy. He has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters, and given more than 30 scientific presentations at national meetings.
He is pleased to provide comprehensive and individualized patient-centered care in a collaborative, team-based approach to all those throughout Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and the surrounding areas. He is married and lives in New York City with his wife, Anna Isaacson, who is an executive in sports business.
