The Connecticut Whale women’s professional hockey team announced today that Yale Medicine will provide the team with medical care. A Yale Medicine team physician will administer sports medicine pre- and post-season physicals, and provide game day medical triage and optimal athletic medicine off the ice.

“Our Premier Hockey Federation players deserve world class medical care,” said Whale principal owner, Tobin Kelly. “Through our partnership with Yale Medicine, this high-level care will be provided from the moment players arrive for training camp through any follow-up care, physical therapy, or rehab they might need after an injury to get them back on the ice. From our very first conversation, it was clear that Yale Medicine shared the belief that our players deserve only the best.”

“On behalf of Yale Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation, we are thrilled to partner with the Connecticut Whale team,” said department chair Lisa Lattanza, MD. “We are committed to providing patient-centered, personalized, world-class, and state of the art sports medicine care for high school, collegiate, and professional athletes. This encompasses appropriate training and prevention as well as comprehensive treatment of sports-related injuries. We look forward to supporting the Whale’s players through cutting-edge technology, surgical innovation, and our team of globally-recognized physicians.”

Yale Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation sports medicine physicians provide a variety of care options including non-surgical, preventative, and interventional treatments for athletes and assist them in getting back to their prior level of activity. Yale Medicine physicians also treat a variety of common sports-related injuries like ACL tears and ruptures using minimally invasive techniques with the goal of returning athletes to the sports they love as soon as possible, feeling as strong as they did prior to injury.

In addition to the Connecticut Whale, Yale physicians work with the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun, Southern Connecticut State University Athletics, and Yale Athletics. The Yale Medicine logo will be featured on the Whale’s traditional jerseys for all home games during the 2021-22 season.
