What's your orthopaedic subspecialty and why did you go into that subspecialty?

My orthopaedic subspecialty is musculoskeletal oncology, including pathological fractures and metastatic bone cancers, complex skeletal reconstruction, and deformity correction. Also I do reconstructive surgery for knee joint and hip joints. I have a strong passion to enhance the musculoskeletal wellbeing of people around me. I just love what I do.

What's the best part of your clinical practice?

The best part is providing the highest quality of care with innovation. I learn something new every day and that hasn’t changed in 30 years.

Why are you so interested in research, in addition to working in the clinical practice?

Medicine has been around for 2,000 years, and there are certain conditions that are treated exactly the same way 100 years ago, 50 years ago, and 10 years ago. Research is about the future. I try very hard to provide better care, in many different aspects, for the best outcome of patients and also our children and our friends and their family.

Think about every situation, because we call this “medical practice.” Practice usually entails doing the same thing on and on again. By doing only that, we cannot advance the field. We need to think, and to innovate to improve lives.

Dr. Francis Lee

What's some advice you give to medical students or residents?

Think, think, think how to innovate, how to integrate, and how to align. Absolutely think about every situation, because we call this “medical practice.” Practice usually entails doing the same thing on and on again. By doing only that, we cannot advance the field. We need to think, and to innovate to improve lives.

Tell me something you enjoy doing when you're not in clinics or in surgery.

Because I do both research and clinical care, if I have a time after my clinical hours, I take it as time to engage in my orthopaedic research. I have a very strong passion for this, and it becomes my hobby.
