IVF is one of the treatment options for managing infertility wherein developing eggs are collected from the woman’s ovaries (during a minor procedure performed under sedation) and are mixed with the male partner’s sperm in the laboratory to create an embryo. The embryo/s are allowed to develop over the next 3 to 5 days in incubators in the laboratory and are then transferred directly into the woman’s uterus. Embryo transfer procedure is very simple and painless. Attachment of the transferred embryo/s to the uterine lining (implantation) follows a few days after embryo transfer. A blood pregnancy test is performed 15 days after egg retrieval to confirm if implantation occurred. Once pregnancy test is positive, the pregnancy is monitored by a combination of blood tests and ultrasound.
IVF is the treatment of choice for couples where the female partner has blocked, severely damaged, or absent fallopian tubes. For those with severe male factor infertility (where the male partner has poor sperm), IVF with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is recommended (a single sperm is injected into a mature egg to facilitate fertilization). IVF should also be considered in couples with a long standing history of infertility, those with unexplained infertility, with severe endometriosis or in couples who have not been able to conceive with other infertility treatments.
Because women have a finite quantity of eggs, reproductive banking (egg/embryo freezing for future use) is gaining popularity and an increasing number of women are seeking IVF treatment for the purpose of postponing reproduction.
