Dr. Flannery's Lab

Research Interests

Dr. Flannery is interested in the effect of insulin resistance and obesity on endometrial pathology. Insulin resistance is also an underlying problem in the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Women with these conditions have a higher risk of irregular bleeding, implantation failure, miscarriage, endometrial hyperplasia, and endometrial carcinoma. The goal of Dr. Flannery’s research program is to determine whether this endometrial dysfunction is a consequence of the metabolic abnormalities occurring in insulin resistance. Using techniques in molecular biology, the Flannery lab examines potential mechanisms for how insulin contributes to the development of endometrial cancer. In addition, the Flannery lab is also investigating the role of insulin in normal placental function, as well as placental dysfunction in women with obesity.
