The human brain is responsible for our species’ most unique traits, but also underlies our susceptibility to neuropsychiatric disorders. Healthy brain development relies on the precise spatiotemporal regulation of the transcriptome, a feat that is carried out by myriad non-coding regulatory elements. Thus, understanding neuropsychiatric disease requires the identification and characterization of these regulatory programs, which provide the link between genetic variation and disease risk. However, our ability to make these connections is significantly impeded by our lack of a comprehensive understanding of the regulatory and epigenomic landscape of the human brain.

With this goal in mind, the PsychENCODE Consortium was formed by the National Institute of Mental Health in 2015 to identify geomic elements active within the human brain throughout the span of development, and to characterize their role in evolution and neuropsychiatric disease. At this workshop, members of the consortium will discuss their recent accomplishments as highlighted in the Science PsychENCODE collection.
