Changing the Landscape of Carotid Artery Disease Treatment

Carlos Mena, MD, professor of medicine (cardiovascular medicine), is the site principal investigator for CREST-2, a clinical trial that aims to compare different methods of stroke prevention to determine the safest and most effective treatment options for individuals with carotid artery disease. In a QA, Mena discusses his work in the clinical trial and shares new findings that could potentially change the landscape for treating the disease.

Since 1998, Women’s Health Research at Yale’s signature Pilot Project Program has provided critical seed funding for Yale faculty examining sex differences across health in conditions that affect women differently, disproportionately, and uniquely. Our program serves as an incubator for catalyzing new approaches to understanding the health of women, and/or the influence of sex differences on health, consistent with the NIH definition. The 2025-26 application process is now open.

Biomedical Research Saves Human Lives

The last half of the 20th century saw a sea change in our capacity to fight disease and improve health. The bedrock for this development was the consistent support for biomedical research, and the nation has benefited from scientific discoveries that have been translated into treatments for previously untreatable conditions. Since our inception in 1998, Women’s Health Research at Yale (WHRY) has initiated and supported such research on health conditions that directly affect communities all over the country. In particular, we have focused on advancing our understanding of women’s health and on sex differences in health and disease that inform our understanding and treatment of disorders in women and men.

Liver Cancer Screening: A New Tool for Improved Detection

Hepatocellular carcinoma, a type of liver cancer, is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Screening efforts for this cancer focus on individuals diagnosed with viral hepatitis or those known to have irreversible liver scarring, or cirrhosis. Due in part to increasing rates of obesity, another major risk factor is emerging, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), but factors associated with MASLD are not included in current screening practices.

In response, researchers at Yale have developed and validated a new risk score for hepatocellular carcinoma that considers these factors. Their work, “Risk Score for Hepatocellular Cancer in Adults Without Viral Hepatitis or Cirrhosis” was published on November 6, 2024, in JAMA Network Open.

A new study reveals significant insights into the challenges that can occur for hepatitis C virus (HCV) micro-elimination efforts in people with HIV (PWH). Due to the opioid epidemic, the prevalence of co-infection with HIV and HCV has been increasing. If left untreated, HCV infection can lead to liver damage, cancer, and death. Although HIV requires lifelong therapy, HCV can be cured with a few months of oral medications.
