Yale Primary Care Pediatrics Curriculum has National Footprint

The Yale Primary Care Pediatrics Curriculum is a guide for organized, case-centered, evidence-based discussions of core topics in outpatient pediatrics as well as issues relating to the ethical, legal, and business aspects of healthcare. It was initially launched in the Yale Pediatrics Residency Program in 2005 with 52 topics. Since then, the curriculum’s editors, Jaideep Talwalkar and Ada Fenick, have overseen its growth to 94 topics authored by over 100 current and former Yale faculty and trainees. Ninety training programs, plus additional outpatient practices, currently subscribe to the curriculum, which is continually updated based on new literature. Each topic is arranged in a standardized format: a case vignette followed by a series of questions. A moderator’s version contains suggested answers to the questions, teaching pearls, and suggestions for group exercises to reinforce key points. Curricular evaluation revealed that after the change to this structured curriculum, the primary care conference at Yale occurred more dependably, and learners demonstrated improved attendance, advance preparation, and participation. More information about the curriculum, including lists of topics and authors can be found at the PCPC website.
