Yale Pathways to Science Summer Scholars

From July 13–17, 2026, twelve local high school students participated in Cracking the Code of Cancer: Exploring HER2 Expression in Breast Cancer Through Protein Analysis, a week-long workshop offered through Yale Pathways to Science Summer Scholars that introduces local students to STEM through immersive, hands-on learning experiences. Using the case of a fictional patient, “Maya,” portrayed by a postbaccalaureate fellow, students stepped into the role of a clinical diagnostic team, applying laboratory techniques, including protein quantification assays and Western blotting, to determine whether her breast cancer was HER2-positive and recommend a treatment strategy based on their findings.

Through hands-on activities, a simulated biopsy and tumor board, and an interactive Cancer Jeopardy competition, students developed foundational laboratory skills while exploring breast cancer biology, molecular diagnostics, and personalized medicine. The workshop, directed by Faye Rogers, PhD, led by Karen DSouza, PhD, and Bryan D. McKiver, PhD, and supported by postbaccalaureate fellows Adriana Soto, Nicole Constante, and Renee Pascoe, concluded with a career panel featuring members of the instructional team who shared their journeys into science and medicine, giving students a firsthand look at the many pathways to careers in biomedical research and healthcare.
