The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce Peter J. Gruber, MD, PhD as Vice Chair of Research. Dr. Gruber is a Professor of Surgery at the Yale School of Medicine and a Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, where his clinical practice and research has focused on surgical repair of complex congenital heart disease.

“I look forward to the opportunity to galvanize our academic community, expand our research portfolio, and support the next generation of scholars across the basic, translational, and clinical science research domains,” said Dr. Gruber of his appointment.

Dr. Gruber’s research on understanding the molecular, genetic, and epigenetic underpinnings of cardiac development and function is world-renowned, having led to discoveries of new disease genes for congenital heart disease and epigenetic therapies to improve cardiac function after injury. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the American Surgical Association and has authored over 150 scientific publications.

“Dr. Gruber is a surgeon-scientist of the highest caliber — a walking example of our tripartite mission. We are privileged to have his leadership,” said Dr. Nita Ahuja, Chair of the Department of Surgery.

Previous Vice Chair of Research Dr. John Geibel will continue to lead the Masters in Health Science Program for surgical residents and coordinate all research surgical training opportunities for undergraduates.

“Dr. Geibel’s dedication to our academic growth has laid a foundation that will allow the Department to flourish,” said Dr. Ahuja.

In addition to overseeing the Department’s research enterprise, Dr. Gruber will continue his clinical activities in the YNHH Children’s Heart Center.
