On Leadership

January 21, 2017

Hi everyone,

I've been contemplating leadership this weekend. True leaders inspire us to:

Overcome daunting odds,

Bind our wounds,

Stare down fear,

Do for others,

And to dream.

Leaders aren’t necessarily big or strong,

But they lead by example,

And, when necessary, they challenge authority,

And take risks.

Leaders treat everyone with respect. They are kind, and wise, and know many things. They model excellence, embrace diversity, and express themselves beautifully. They are creative, funny, generous, and full of energy. True leaders lift us, and teach us, and kvell when we succeed.

This week we will begin to choose our Chief Residents for the 2018-19 academic year. Tomorrow morning, Brett will distribute a survey listing eligible PGY2s (I.e., those not short tracking). Please identify the residents you believe epitomize kindness, honesty, intelligence, and commitment to high ideals. We are fortunate, as always, to have many more qualified candidates than positions. Your input is essential, so vote and share your thoughts by January 31.

Enjoy your Sunday,

Mark

PS, a poem to honor a weekend dedicated to inclusion, diversity, dignity, and human rights:
