New, Joint Appointments Will Further Align YM and YNHHS

July 26, 2018

Yale Medicine (YM) and Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) have made several high-level, joint appointments recently in order to implement a unified vision of quality and safety; create a common, integrated standard of care; and develop and coordinate new clinical relationships.

Three new positions with dual reporting to both organizations were created recently, a sign of the growing collaborative relationship and continuing alignment between YM and YNHHS. Following are descriptions of the three new positions and the individuals appointed to fill them.

Steven Choi, Chief Quality Officer

Steven Choi, MD, was named the inaugural Chief Quality Officer for Yale Medicine and Yale New Haven Health following a comprehensive national search. He will begin on Sept. 4.

In this newly created position, Dr. Choi will be responsible for developing and overseeing the implementation of a common safety and quality agenda across all inpatient and ambulatory Yale Medicine and Yale New Haven Health practice sites.

Most recently, Dr. Choi has served as the Montefiore Health System Assistant Vice President, Montefiore Network Performance Improvement Director, and Montefiore Institute for Performance Improvement Executive Director. Montefiore Health System is a large academic health system comprising more than 11 hospitals and 180 ambulatory locations across Westchester County and the Hudson Valley in New York. It has academic affiliations with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore School of Nursing.

Rogerio Lilenbaum, Chief Medical Integration Officer for Ambulatory Services

Rogerio Lilenbaum, MD, who had been chief medical officer at Smilow Cancer Hospital for more than five years, began a new role on June 1 as the inaugural Chief Medical Integration Officer for Ambulatory Services for Yale New Haven Health, Northeast Medical Group, and Yale Medicine.

In this new role, Dr. Lilenbaum will be responsible for partnering with Yale New Haven Health, Yale Medicine, and clinical leadership to create and deploy common practice standards and a single signature of care across all ambulatory practice sites. He will continue his clinical practice at Smilow as an integral member of the Thoracic Oncology Program.

Dr. Lilenbaum joined Smilow Cancer Hospital in January 2013 and helped shape it into a leading center of clinical excellence and innovation. During his tenure, Dr. Lilenbaum oversaw significant growth in the clinical practice in New Haven and across the entire Smilow network, including the addition of five new care centers.

Peter Schulam, Chief Innovation and Transformation Officer, YNHHS

Peter Schulam, MD, PhD, will take on the new role of Chief Innovation and Transformation Officer for Yale New Haven Health System, in addition to his existing roles as Chair of Urology, Yale Medicine; Chief of Urology, Yale New Haven Hospital; and Faculty Director of the Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking at Yale University.

In this new position, Dr. Schulam will be responsible for facilitating the development and coordination of clinical relationships with system delivery networks and with selected affiliate hospitals. These relationships may take on a number of different forms, from telemedicine to the deployment of Yale Medicine specialty physicians and programs throughout the region.

Dr. Schulam will report to both YM and YNHHS. He will work closely with Rich Lisitano, Yale New Haven Hospital Vice President, Administration, and Kimbirly Moriarty, Yale Medicine Chief Strategy Officer, who will serve as his administrative partners in developing and implementing this system-focused effort.
