Karl Insogna, MD, FACP, Ensign Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology); director, Yale Bone Center; and associate director, Yale Center for X-Linked Hypophosphatemia, has received funding from Yale University’s Core Facilities Request for Equipment Replacement and Upgrade Program to acquire an UltraFocus digital x-ray cabinet by Faxitron®. This new equipment will assist researchers with the ability to precisely quantify body fat, muscle, and mineralized tissue content in animal models. The UltraFocus machine will be the first of its kind at Yale School of Medicine (YSM).

This new technology will help investigators across Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pathology, Immunobiology, and Developmental Biology and others to obtain non-invasive, precise measurements of regional and total body bone mass and lean/fat mass measurements in small animals used in research.

The addition of the UltraFocus machine and its capabilities is essential to sustain and increase the current pace of biomedical research and discovery in skeletal biology and metabolism at YSM. The instrument will be located in TAC S-126 and managed by Edwin Siu, MS in the Insogna lab, under the guidance of Ben-Hua Sun, MD, who already manages the microCT instrument. Insogna is available to help with study design and sample size estimation as needed.

Researchers across YSM and Yale University are welcome to take advantage of this new technology. In order to maintain this machinery and cover the expense of service contracts and maintenance, the Section of Endocrinology & Metabolism will be developing a cost-recovery program that will be available at a later date.

The Section of Endocrinology & Metabolism is one of the 11 sections within the Department of Internal Medicine. To learn more about their work, visit Endocrinology & Metabolism.
