Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Update (June 2021)

June 15, 2021
by Inginia Genao

June is an important month for us all. Two national observances occur this month in recognition of two communities that have been historically marginalized: Juneteenth and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual and all sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQI+) Pride Month. On June 19, 1865, federal troops took control of the state of Texas to ensure all enslaved people were freed. Considered the longest-running African American holiday, Juneteenth honors slavery’s end in the U.S. LGBTQI+ Pride Month is held in June to commemorate the beginning of the modern LGBTQI+ movement, the anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues, friends, and families in the LGBTQI+ and Black communities, in June and every month.

I am proud to announce the new Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Internal Medicine (ODEIM) webpage. The page highlights the goals of the office, leadership team, and staff support team. We will continue to add to this page as the office develops. We will add vice chiefs for staff over the next few months. If you are interested in serving the department in this role, please let us know.

In addition, I can now share that we have hired Cayetana Navarro, MBA, PMP, for the program manager role. They will officially join the department on June 28 from the Yale School of Medicine Office of Communications, where they worked for 10 years.

The restructuring of the Diversity Committee continues. Fill out this form to participate in the committee or one of the subcommittees.

For this month’s “Voices of DEI” we highlight Traditional Residency Program Director Mark Siegel, MD, professor of medicine (pulmonary). I hope you enjoy it! Complete this Voices of DEI form, if you wish to participate.

Please contact me with any questions regarding the department’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Diversity Committee, and/or ODEIM. As always, thank you for all you do to make Yale a better place.

Sincerely,

Inginia Genao, MD, FACP

Associate Chair, Diversity & Inclusion
