The annual graduation of diagnostic radiology residents at Yale School of Medicine is a celebration for residents and their families who supported them for four years, but it can bring mixed emotions for the faculty who trained them.
“It is always a moment of great sweet sorrow for me to see the residents graduate and leave,” says Syed A. Jamal Bokhari, MBBS, MD, professor of radiology and biomedical imaging and of surgery (trauma), and director of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program. “But it is also a moment of great joy to see them successfully mature into radiologists that far exceed my ability.”
Bokhari, who has been affiliated with the residency program for 25 years – first as associate director and now as director – spoke June 12 at the annual ceremony at the New Haven Lawn Club, where the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging honored 16 graduating residents.
“I want to start by saying just how proud the faculty are of you,” says Christopher Whitlow, MD, PhD, chair of radiology and biomedical imaging and assistant dean for translational research. “If you matched at Yale, it already means you are incredibly talented. We’re very fortunate to get the best and brightest medical students, and we have faculty who are incredibly dedicated to training and teaching.”
The evening included awards for students and faculty, presentation of diplomas, and concluded with a good-natured roast of faculty and fellow students by the departing chief residents.
