Mona Sharifi, MD, MPH, will be stepping down from her role as section chief of general pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine (YSM) and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital (YNHCH), effective August 31, 2026, after which she will serve as chief of the Division of General Pediatrics at Stanford School of Medicine.
Dr. Sharifi is an associate professor of Pediatrics and Biomedical Informatics at YSM and an associate professor of Biostatistics (Health Informatics) at Yale School of Public Health. She also serves as founding director of Pediatric Health Services and Implementation Research, co-director of the Yale National Clinician Scholars Program, and co-director of CORNET, the Academic Pediatric Association’s national practice-based research network in academic pediatric primary care. Since joining the faculty at YSM in 2016, Dr. Sharifi has been a driving force in building capacity and infrastructure for health services research and implementation science at Yale through mentorship of over 40 students, trainees, and junior faculty and her leadership roles in the Section of General Pediatrics, the National Clinician Scholars Program, and the program in Pediatric Health Services and Implementation Research , a community of faculty and staff across the health professional schools dedicated to transforming child health by bridging discovery and practice.
Maryellen Flaherty-Hewitt, MD, will start as interim section chief of general pediatrics, effective September 1, 2026.
Dr. Flaherty-Hewitt is a professor of pediatrics (general pediatrics), the medical director of Pediatric Primary Care, and vice chair for faculty affairs and professional development in the Department of Pediatrics. She received her medical degree from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and completed her pediatric residency and Chief Residency at New York Hospital–Weill Cornell Medical Center. She is board-certified in pediatrics and was previously the interim Section Chief of General Pediatrics from 2019 to 2024.
Dr. Flaherty-Hewitt is widely recognized for her excellence in clinical care, education, and mentorship. Her honors include the 2026 Norman J. Siegel, MD Faculty Award, and the 2023 Howard A. Pearson, MD Faculty Teaching Award. She is deeply committed to faculty development, quality improvement, and advancing primary care for children and families.
