YSM Curriculum Update

ATP Schedules Are Now Complete for 2023 - 2024

ATP schedules for academic year 2023-2024 are now completed in MedHub. All student changes initiated during the open enrollment period from December 5-9 have been made. Any future or additional changes will now require the use of an add/drop form available on Yale Connect yaleconnect.yale.edu/form_answers?id=69964.

If you have any questions about your schedule, contact ysm.studentaffairs@yale.edu.

New Electives & Seminars

As you get ready to apply for electives and sub-internships, we’d like to update you on some new offerings:

  1. A seminar in bioethics which will run from April 10-21, 2023.
  2. An elective in cardiac surgery (formerly only available as a subI).
  3. A sub-internship in anesthesiology (formerly only available as an advanced elective).

We are working on finalizing processes for this sub-I so that it can be selected in January 2023. This will particularly benefit students who may be interested in pursuing anesthesia residencies.

Lockers

Lockers are available for students during the ATP. The lockers are located on the third-floor connector between YNHH and the Hunter Building, near surgery, SP3 Bypass Corridor. These lockers are 3 ft. x 1 ft. and 18 inches deep.

Students may sign up for a locker any time throughout the ATP using this link: ATP Locker Request

Locks for the lockers are provided by the Office of Curriculum. Once you request a locker, instructions for lock pick-up will be provided.

If you have any questions, please contact Gina Franco or Francesca Torelli

Applying to Away Electives

For the class of 2024, please review the email sent by Terri Tolson on November 15th regarding the process to apply to away electives via VSLO. You may request access to the VSLO service by contacting Patti Smith. For more information, you can follow this link: students-residents.aamc.org/visiting-student-learning-opportunities/visiting-student-learning-opportunities-vslo. The email also links to databases of sites participating, and not participating in the VSLO process.

Peer/Student Feedback on Electives & Subinternships

In the Box collection of peer student feedback regarding electives and subinternships, there are student reviews of their experiences on specific electives and subinternships and a file with electives/subinternships that directors feel are helpful in learning skills related to pursuing their specialty as a career choice has been added. The materials in this folder will be updated 1-2 times per year so that anonymity may be preserved. Additionally, we are working with the surgical sub-I directors to create concurrent electives that offer more experiences for career exploration and learning prior to committing to a subinternship.

Capstone Course

A reminder to all students anticipating graduating in 2023, the Capstone course will be from February 27th to March 24th. Attendance at Capstone sessions is mandatory, and you should anticipate needing to be in New Haven during this period. The Capstone course is designed to provide a review of important topics prior to starting your internship. It includes common scenarios in the Simulation Center as well as boot camps in the various specialties.

If you have questions about the Capstone course please contact the course directors, Dr. Barry J. Wu and Dr. Oluwatosin Adeyemo or the course coordinator, A Gould
