Dr. Takeo Nishida Receives Award, June 2013

It is a great pleasure for all of us at the Yale HHT Center to announce that Dr. Nishida won the Dr. Robert I. White Jr. HHT Foundation young clinician award, which was announced at the 10thInternational HHT Conference in Cork, Ireland.

This was real team effort. Dr. Nishida won NIH support from the Brain Vascular Malformation Consortium collaborators for the first year of his fellowship and his second year was funded by generous support from patients and friends of the Yale HHT center.

Dr. Nishida and his family spent 2 years with us, while completing the review of brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in HHT. He was the first author of an important paper on brain AVMs which furthers our understanding of screening and management of this aspect of HHT. He also presented new work on micro AVMs of the brain at the 10th international HHT conference in Cork, Ireland, June 12-15th 2013.

Dr. Nishida trained at Osaka University in Japan and is part of a growing effort in Japan to treat HHT which is as common in Japan as in Europe and North and South America. He is an outstanding interventional neurosurgeon. Other HHT centers of excellence in Japan are located at Akita University, a northern prefecture of Japan, where the incidence of HHT is 200/million.

This year the young clinical award was also presented to Dr. Justin McWilliams, the co-director of the UCLA HHT center. Dr. McWilliams is an outstanding young clinician and interventional radiologist.
