Two Yale School of Medicine students, fourth-year MD student Victor Lee and second-year MD-PhD student Samuel Liburd, tied for first-place in the DICOM-a-thon competition in October 2020. 
As part of the event, the 17 participants learned how to use the DICOM Director web portal to take a medical image, such as a CT scan, and convert it into a 3D model. The 3D models can then be viewed on a laptop, an Augmented Reality device, or a Virtual Reality device. Seventeen participants submitted their models, along with an explanation of how their model could be used in the practice of medicine.
Liburd, who is interested in surgery, made a model of the blood vessels of the abdomen. He explained his model could be used as a guide for surgeons performing procedures such as an organ transplant.
