Daniel Tobin, MD, FACP, BS, associate professor term and medical director for the Adult Primary Care Center at Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) Saint Raphael Campus, and Stephen Holt, MD, MS, FACP, associate professor of medicine (general medicine) and associate program director, Ambulatory Education, Yale Primary Care Residency Program, recently were honored by the American College of Physicians (ACP) Connecticut Chapter.

General Internal Medicine physician Tobin was honored with the Laureate Award, which he said was ‘humbling and incredibly meaningful.’ Tobin's area of academic research has focused on opioid safety and pain management in primary care as well as on medical education. Clinically, Tobin is a primary care provider who oversees the operations of the SRC Adult Primary Care Center and has expertise in the diagnosis and management of complex medical conditions in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

“My involvement with ACP has afforded me the opportunity to work with and learn from world-class clinician-educators from around the country, and it has been a privilege to join them in teaching and mentoring our physician colleagues, particularly those still in training,” he said. “The ACP has been source of great professional growth and camaraderie for me; I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by so many amazing internists working to promote health advocacy, excellence in patient care, and professionalism in the practice of medicine. I feel that there are many more deserving of the Laureate Award than me, but I will do my best to be worthy of this honor in the years ahead.”

Holt won the inaugural ACP Early Career Educator of the Year (CT) award. His interests include addiction medicine, medical education, and the art and science of physical diagnosis. Holt’s clinical activities include ambulatory clinic precepting, co-directing the Addiction Recovery Clinic at YNHH Saint Raphael Campus, and general medicine ward attending several months per year.

“For me, the teaching awards that I have received, which I proudly display in my office, remind me of the scope of impact that one can have as a clinician educator,” said Holt. “While I dearly love the one to one connections I get to make with my patients on a daily basis, it is the connections that I make with students and residents, knowing that I am inspiring the next generation of clinicians, who themselves will have meaningful connections with hundreds more patients, that I find no less fulfilling.”

The Section of General Internal Medicine is one of the eleven academic sections within YSM’s Department of Internal Medicine. To learn more about their work, visit General Internal Medicine.
