Yale’s Dr. Katherine McKenzie practices asylum medicine, the process of evaluating claims of torture and mistreatment by asylum seekers. Many times, these evaluations are conducted in a dreary, prison-like atmosphere in detention centers. McKenzie, assistant professor of internal medicine and director of the Yale Center for Asylum Medicine, describes her experiences and those of the asylum seekers, who face new forms of trauma as they await a decision on their fate.
Her essay was published online Feb. 27 in the New England Journal of Medicine.
