The Department of Anesthesiology will host Nora D. Volkow, MD, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, as its keynote speaker for the department’s Third Annual Research Retreat to be held October 5-6, 2018.
Roberta L. Hines, MD, chair and Nicholas M. Greene Professor of Anesthesiology, says, “Our annual research retreat is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the expanding role of academic anesthesiology within the School of Medicine and to highlight the ways that our faculty and trainees can and do engage in advancing science and the public health.”
Volkow will speak at two events during her visit. On Friday, October 5, she will address the entire School of Medicine community regarding National Institutes of Health (NIH) perspectives on “Science Strategies to Address the Opioid Crisis.” (10/5/18; 2 p.m., Brady Memorial Auditorium). “In the context of increasing morbidity and mortality associated with opioid use disorders, we are particularly pleased to host Dr. Volkow and to highlight departmental research relevant to opioid addiction and pain syndromes,” says Hines.
On Saturday, October 6, Dr. Volkow will speak to the Anesthesiology Department on the topic of "Neuroimaging Studies on Sleep." Helene Benveniste, MD, PhD, Professor of Anesthesiology, says, “Yale’s excellence in neuroimaging, and the collaborations that are made possible at the Magnetic Resonance Research Center (MRRC), are key reasons that I was drawn to join the faculty at Yale. It is a privilege to host Dr. Volkow for this important symposium.”
In addition to Volkow's talks, the Anesthesiology Research Retreat includes a day of activities at the Omni Hotel on October 6, featuring moderated poster sessions and oral presentations from faculty and trainees covering major academic foci of the department including projects within the neurosciences, vascular biology, and clinical trials.
“It has been a pleasure to watch our research symposium expand each year.” says Laura E. Niklason, vice chair for research, Nicholas M. Greene Professor of Anesthesiology, and professor of biomedical engineering. “Our department has risen to be among the top 10 nationally in receipt of NIH funds, and we anticipate further growth as a result of our internal mentoring programs, including a T32 Training Grant and a dedicated Resident Research Scholars Program. Each of these programs continues to bear fruit as we mentor the next generation of physician-scientists.”
