Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven

20 York Street New Haven, CT 06510

The Yale New Haven Hospital-York Street Campus encompasses the 168-bed Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven. The building is named after Yale alumnus Joel E. Smilow (Yale College, '54), former chair, chief executive officer and president of Playtex Products, Inc. He and his wife, Joan, gave a major gift to support the cancer hospital.

Smilow Cancer Hospital treats more cancer patients than any other hospital in Connecticut. With regards to the Brain Tumor Program, patients with cancerous and non-cancerous tumors are treated by specialized brain tumor surgeons at Smilow. While patients with spine tumors primarily undergo surgical intervention at YNHH- St. Raphael’s Campus, they too benefit from the Smilow expertise. More specifically, this includes a unique, comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach for patient care, combining expertise from specialists in the diagnosis and surgical and non-surgical management (i.e. chemotherapy, radiation) of brain tumors in one location, often times allowing for post-surgical follow-up care to be done closer to home with affiliated physicians. A Tumor Board is held once a week where all patients with brain and spine tumors are discussed. Moreover, Smilow Cancer Hospital is a leader in personalized cancer care, known as Precision Medicine, through innovative tumor profiling techniques used to analyze every patient's cancer and offers numerous clinical trials not offered at other hospitals, when appropriate.

Some of Smilow's special features include a roof-top healing garden on the seventh floor - an outdoor garden, complete with trees, shrubs, plants, a small stream, benches and lovely views of New Haven. Smilow has a magnificent two-story glass lobby with a terrazzo floor, a granite waterwall, terracotta walls and maple woodwork. A special boutique will help patients look and feel better, despite their illness. In addition to the comprehensive services we provide at Smilow Cancer Hospital on our main campus in New Haven, we also feature individualized and innovative local care at several centers around our region.
