Michael L.J.Apuzzo Award for Creativity and Innovation in Contribution to the Peer Reviewed Medical Literature

Original thought and new ideas are the catalysts for progress in neurosurgery. The Peer Reviewed Literature is the documented foundation for medical knowledge and serves as the ground for validation of originality of thought in medicine. This Award recognizes creative and innovative work by a Yale neurosurgery resident in either clinical or laboratory research areas that most exemplifies original thinking and is subsequently published in a major peer reviewed  journal  during the previous academic year.

Michael LJ Apuzzo holds the appointment of Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Neurosurgery at the Yale School of Medicine. He is widely recognized as one of the worlds best known and respected neurosurgeons. A New Haven native, he is a graduate of the Hopkins School and Yale College(1961).After obtaining foundational medical education at Boston and McGill Universities , he completed fellowships in Neuropathology and Neurophysiology at the Yale School of Medicine. He completed residency in neurosurgery under William F. Collins at the Yale-New Haven Hospital(1973).

Subsequently, Apuzzo's diverse and highly productive career was principally focused on disorders of the human cerebrum and the application of emerging technologies and progressive neuroscience by creative and innovative methods to establish the cutting edge of modernity. These included pioneering work in micro neurosurgery, minimal invasion, endoscopy, imaging directed neurosurgery, cerebral navigation, radio surgery, simulation, operating room design, functional restoration, immunology, molecular biology and applications of nanotechnology.

Over a four decade period Apuzzo's activities and collective body of work helped to reinvent neurosurgery and earned him iconic historical status.

He served as Editor in Chief of the international peer reviewed journal NEUROSURGERY for 19 years.

During that period, he led the publication into the digital age founding and developing NEUROSURGERY-Online and Operative NEUROSURGERY. These publications proved to be highly influential and acted as primary catalysts in clinical and research areas world wide.Later, he was asked to found, direct and develop World Neurosurgery and World by the World Federation of Neurological Societies.Over a 5 year period the publication rapidly attained a place among the leading peer reviewed journals in clinical neuroscience.
