by David A. Hafler

I am pleased to announce that beginning July 1, Emily Gilmore, MD will assume the role of Medical Director of the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit at Yale. Emily is well-known to all of you as a nationally distinguished clinician, scientist, and educator. She is a very able administrative leader and beloved by trainees and patients. Dr. Gilmore has won numerous awards for her teaching and is one of the very few NICU medical directors in the country who also serves as a Principal Investigator on an NIH RO1.

The Neuroscience ICU has been established on a culture of multi-disciplinary teamwork, and the unit has been a pioneer in new approaches, technologies, and disciplines, all towards the service of our patients. The ICU maintains strong collaborations with Vascular Neurology, Epilepsy, and all divisions in our department and beyond. The highly collaborative approach of the NICU has created strong ties to Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery and others, also embodied in recent COVID service at the Department of Medicine. Emily has been at the center of all of this work and in the development of new programs in head trauma and neuromonitoring. Under her leadership, the fellowship program is now one of the most competitive in the nation. She is also a thoughtful, compassionate leader.

In short, I am delighted that Emily will become our next NICU Director, as she continues to take the clinical program to the next level. Please join me in wishing her success in her new role.
