Fuehrlein to Coach in YSM Longitudinal Coaching Program

May 19, 2023

Brian Fuehrlein, MD, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry, has been selected to be a coach in the new Yale School of Medicine Longitudinal Coaching Program.

The program will inaugurate with the YSM Class of 2027. Coaches will work with the same medical students over their training at YSM to help them achieve their full potential. Coaches will review student assessments; track their progress along developmental milestones; facilitate their reflection, self-monitoring, and identification of learning needs; and assist students in creating their personal learning plans.

The coaches, as part of a larger team, will also help students overcome learning challenges. The coach and student pairs will be grouped by academic advisor and assigned to “colleges” to facilitate near peer teaching, networking, and social events.

The program is being implemented as part of the 2022 YSM strategic plan for medical education. Coaches will begin their work when students arrive on campus in August.

Fuehrlein is director of the psychiatric emergency room at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven. He has a strong interest in medical student and resident education, particularly surrounding addiction psychiatry, and serves on multiple local and national committees in this role.

He has been honored with three prestigious awards at YSM for his teaching work.
