Biography

Soohyun Nam is an associate professor in the Adult-Gerontological, Family, and Women’s Health nurse practitioner specialty and PhD program. She received her BSN from Seoul National University in Seoul, South Korea. She received both a master’s degree as an adult nurse practitioner and a PhD in nursing from University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Interdisciplinary Training in Health Disparities Research at the Johns Hopkins University. She has been the principal investigator or project director on federally funded projects focusing on control and prevention of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. She is a nationally certified nurse practitioner who has been working with adults with diverse race/ethnicity. Dr. Nam found that adults of diverse race/ethnicity experience multiple barriers to accessing and navigating healthcare systems and to managing their chronic diseases that often require substantial health behavior change and self-management. As a clinician, researcher, and nurse educator Dr. Nam is committed to improving cardiovascular health and quality of life for high-risk, underserved population. She is currently conducting a study to understand social networks and obesity risk behaviors among African American women.
